About this course
A good scalp analysis is the foundation of every effective hair and scalp treatment, and it is the skill this UMI Academy course is built around. A good treatment starts with a good analysis. You will learn to recognise the most common scalp conditions, give professional advice and recommend the right hair & scalp care products, so that every recommendation you make rests on what you actually observe rather than guesswork.

Why scalp analysis is the starting point
The scalp is living skin, and like the skin on the rest of the body it can be dry, oily, sensitive, flaky or irritated. Before any treatment or home-care routine is chosen, a structured scalp analysis helps you understand the condition in front of you: the state of the skin, the hair follicles, the level of sebum and any signs that call for caution or referral.
Working methodically also protects your client and your reputation. By following a clear analysis routine, you make consistent observations, document what you see, and base your advice on the actual condition of the scalp rather than on assumptions or a single visible symptom.
What you will learn
- Carry out a structured scalp analysis and observe the skin, follicles and hair in a logical sequence.
- Recognise the most common scalp conditions, such as dryness, excess oil, sensitivity and flaking.
- Distinguish a cosmetic concern from a sign that should be referred to a medical professional.
- Translate your findings into clear, professional advice your client can understand and follow.
- Match the right hair and scalp care products to each condition and explain the reasoning behind your choice.
- Communicate honestly about realistic expectations and the importance of a consistent home-care routine.
Who it is for and how you work
This course is intended for professionals who work with hair and skin every day: salon stylists, skin therapists and clinic teams who want to add a reliable scalp analysis step to their consultations. No two scalps are identical, so the emphasis is on observation, sound judgement and a calm, consultative approach to advice.
Throughout, attention is given to hygiene, safe working practices and knowing your professional limits. A careful analysis includes recognising when a condition falls outside the scope of cosmetic care and should be referred on, which keeps both you and your client on safe ground.
